906 – Above Grade Waterproofing

This course will explore the various systems and methods of waterproofing traffic decks with liquid membranes. We will discuss multiple technologies and proper preparation and installation that will provide effective and long-lasting waterproofing solutions.

This course addresses critical Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) concerns by examining the real-world challenges of waterproofing installation, particularly in light of evolving building and health codes. Participants will gain essential knowledge on proper specification, substrate preparation, and quality assurance practices that directly impact the safety and durability of interior environments. The course also explores the health-driven shift in material standards—specifically the reduction of VOCs & fire resistance—which has significantly altered waterproofing practices and product formulations. As buildings are now constructed to be more airtight, the need for reliable, code-compliant waterproofing and deck coatings has become more urgent to prevent water intrusion, mold growth, fire resistance, and structural deterioration. Through detailed discussion of above-grade applications, this course empowers professionals to design and implement systems that protect occupant health and ensure long-term building performance, meeting key HSW requirements.

1. Understand basic above-grade buried and exposed waterproofing construction terminology and waterproofing approaches.
2. Understand critical details, substrate preparation and installation instructions to ensure a successful installation of above-grade buried and exposed waterproofing systems.
3. Understand the advantages and limitations of each waterproofing system to correctly design and specify the appropriate application, while recognizing that functionality and aesthetics can work hand in hand to achieve both performance and visual appeal.
4. Develop the ability to understand, design, specify, and select the appropriate type of waterproofing system—whether buried or exposed—for various applications.
